On 4 July 2006, 14 researchers from ASEAN countries and the Pacific Islands under the "Human Resources Development Program in Biotechnology for Neighboring Countries 2006" have arrived at the Thailand Science Park. The Group was welcomed by Mrs. Darunee Edwards, BIOTEC Deputy Director and with attendance of Prof. Toshiomi Yoshida, Director of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Bangkok Office.
This is the 6th year that BIOTEC has been operating this training program since 2001 to use Thailand and its experts as a training hub for researchers from neighboring countries in the area of biotechnology by providing scholarships to researchers to be trained in laboratories in Thailand for fundamental courses in 3 months and 6-12 months for advanced courses. This year, 14 scholarships are provided for researchers. BIOTEC supported funds for 12 scholarships whereas 2 scholarships are provided for Pacific Islanders funded by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community. The topics of training this year range from plant cell technology, plant molecular biology, food safety analysis, enzyme technology and biodiversity study. Site visits and cultural program will be arranged for trainees to gain extensive experience apart from technical knowledge.
