BIOTEC executive and researchers visit Vinh University, Vietnam, 22-24 January 2007­.

BIOTEC team led by Dr. Morakot Tanticharoen, Director of BIOTEC, made a visit to Vinh University located in northern Vietnam during 22-24 January 2007.  This visiting aimed to officially introduce some of BIOTEC research activities at BIOTEC to Vinh audience in order to identify key projects to collaborate.  Also it provided an opportunity for Thai team to learn about the academic and research activities as well as to assess research infrastructure at the Agriculture-Forestry-Fishery Faculty of Vinh University. 

A seminar was hosted by Vinh University on January 23. Prof. Nguyen Ngoc Hoi, The Rector of Vinh University, gave an overview of Vinh University and its development.  Scientific presentations included Research in agriculture, forestry and fisheries at Vinh University; and Biodiversity and biostructure of medicinal and aromatic plants from Northern Central of Vietnam by Prof. Nguyen Xuan Dung from Hanoi National University.  Presentations from BIOTEC covered the following topics: The overview of BIOTEC and biodiversity research in Thailand; Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) in rice; Gene transformation for crop improvement; Production of monoclonal antibodies and development of efficient immunological assays for detection of plant pathogens; and Tropical seed and leaf-litter fungi.  The seminar was attended by 50 participants from universities, both students and lecturers, and others from research institutes in the nearby area. 

Vinh University is a center that provides high-quality training in science and technology and conducts scientific research and technology transfer serving the socio-economic development, especially in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries sectors of the North Central region. However, as the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (FAFF) at Vinh University has been recently founded, there is an urgent need for enhancing capacity and qualifications. Generating from the practical need for the development of FAFF of the North central region and based on the human resources of technological science, facilities and strategic development orientations, BIOTEC agrees to extend technical support and assist in human resource capacity building for the University. BIOTEC and Vinh University, Vietnam had signed a Research & Training Collaborative MOU since 5 October 2006.
