Thailand receives WHO funding to set up vaccine plant for bird flu

Thailand has been granted funds from the World Health Organisation to manufacture human flu and bird flu vaccines pilot plant in preparation for a human pandemic.

The grant is part of the WHO implementation of the Global Pandemic Influenza Action Plan, which aims to close the influenza vaccine production gap of several billion doses. Up to US$ 2.5 million will go towards each of the six developing countries including, Brazil, Indonesia, India, Mexico, Thailand, and Vietnam as immediate funding to begin the process of acquiring the needed technology.

Under this grant project, Thai’s Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO) --the host of this project -- planed to set up a new vaccine plant on 100 rai of land in Kaeng Khoi District, Saraburi Province. The GPO factory in Bangkok will be the site of the pilot production of the vaccines for human flu and bird flu.
