BIOTEC awards the US patent for the discovery of antimalarial compounds

BIOTEC research team comprising Prof. Yongyuth Yuthavong, Dr. Bongkoch Tarnchompoo and Dr. Sumalee Kamchonwongpaisan recently obtained the US patent on antimalarial compounds and methods of synthesizing the compounds. The compounds discovered are pyrimidine derivatives which possess antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum lines, including those resistant against pyrimethamine and other antifolates.   A number of these compounds were found to have low toxicity to the human host and are therefore useful in pharmaceutical compositions.

This patent was filed in the US in March 2003 and was granted in May 2007.
