Dr. Lily Eurwilaichitr named recipient to the Taguchi Award 2008

Dr.LilyDr. Lily Eurwilaichitr, Director of BIOTEC’s Bioresources Technology Unit won the Taguchi Award 2008.

The award presentation ceremony was held at the 20th Annual Meeting and International Conference of the Thai Society for Biotechnology on 14 – 17 October 2008.

Dr. Lily Eurwilaichitr graduated in 1989 from Chulalongkorn University, Faculty of Science with a second class honor. She obtained a British Council scholarship to do her Master degree at the International Institute of Biotechnology (IIB), UK. She completed her PhD at the Research School of Bioscience, University of Kent at Canterbury, on Molecular Genetics in yeast. In 1996, she started her career as a the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics (IMBG), Mahidol University, with special interest to establish yeast expression system for expression of proteins of interest, such as, human growth hormone (hGH) and giant catfish growth hormone (gcGH). After six years at IMBG, she moved to Thailand Science Park as a researcher at the Enzyme Technology Laboratory and started to work on using metagenomics approach for novel gene isolation. Dr. Lily has been appointed as the head of the enzyme technology laboratory since 2004 and led a team of researchers to establish and develop technology for gene discovery from unculturable microorganisms from environments. In 2006, she was awarded a L’Oreal Thailand Fellowship “For Women in Science”. Last year, she and her team won an innovation award from National Research Council of Thailand for “ENZhance enzymes detection kit”. She also worked closely with local industries and has several ongoing contract researches with local companies. Academically, she was appointed as an adjunct assistant professor at IMBG since 2002 and also served as either advisor or co-advisor for PhD and MSc students in various universities such as Mahidol University, Chulalongkorn University and King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi.
