BIOTEC/NSTDA to collaborate with the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the food safety assessment

On 5 April 2010, National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) held an MOU signing ceremony with the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to collaborate on the food safety assessment of the products derived from modern biotechnology. Under the agreement, BIOTEC will serve as technical and advisory role to the Thai FDA in assessing the application for importation license for GM crops and grains used in the food and feed industries. The assessment will be conducted by the Food Biosafety Sub Committee comprising of panel of experts in the fields of molecular biology, nutrition, toxicology and allergenicity. In addition, BIOTEC/NSTDA and FDA will support joint activities including building up national capacity as well as setting up systems and regulation in food safety assessment and management to be in line with international standards.
