Establishment of Research Network to Explore Microalgae as an Energy Source

On 14 September 2010, PTT Public Company Limited, an oil and gas company, hosted an MOU signing ceremony to establish a research network to explore microalgae as an energy source.  The Network, consisting of 6 members namely, PTT Research and Technology Institute, Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), BIOTEC and Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), will survey, collect and carry out basic research on microalgae in the following topics:
  • Cultivating, harvesting and extracting techniques at lab-scale, pilot-scale upto commercial –scale; 
  • Oil property and improvement suitable for utilization;
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of oil production; and
  • Study commercial viability
