Rice Gene Discovery Unit awarded the 2010 Outstanding Technologist

On 11 October 2010, the Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Technology under the Patronage of His Majesty the King announced the recipients to the Outstanding Technologist and Young Technologist awards for 2010.  The Outstanding Technologist award went to Rice Gene Discovery Unit for their achievement in employing biotechnology to improve the quality of Thai rice varieties.  


Aj.ApichartRice Gene Discovery Unit is a specialized research laboratory, jointly established by BIOTEC and Kasetsart University.  Leading a team of 21 research staff is Assoc. Prof. Apichart Vanavichit.  The research team was recognized for mastering two major technologies, namely marker-assisted selection technology and technique to accumulate 2AP, the major potent flavor component of aromatic rice.  These technologies have enabled the team to develop 8 new rice varieties that can withstand environmental stresses (e.g. flood), diseases (e.g. blight, blast, brown planthopper), as well as improved yield and nutrition.  

The Young Technologist Awards were presented to: 

  1. Asst. Prof. Dr. Chotirat Ratanamahatana (Chulalongkorn University) for her research on “Time series mining using dynamic time warping technique”,
  2. Asst. Prof. Dr. Pimthong Thongnopkun (Burapha University) for her research on “Using nano silver clay in Thai jewelry”,
  3. Asst. Prof. Dr. Yodyium Tipsuwan (Kasetsart University) for his research on “Smart doser: clear water tank cleaning robot”.
