Position 1. Research on Bioactive Fungal Metabolites
Job description: The candidate will work in the chemistry of bioactive fungal metabolites. The primary research job is the isolation and structure elucidation of novel compounds from fungal cultures. As application, the candidate will also be requested to study on semi-synthesis or precursor-directed biosynthesis of the analogues of the bioactive compounds found by himself/herself.
Eligibility/Specific Qualifications: The postdoctoral candidate should have the main educational background of natural product chemistry and/or synthetic organic chemistry. For the candidate who is skilled in synthetic organic chemistry, previous experience of natural product isolation is not requested. The sabbatical leave cases will also be preferably considered.
Position 2. Role of the prophenoloxidase (proPO) system in shrimp antiviral immunity
Job description: The project will involve in vitro and in vivo work, principally using both cell culture (primary hemocyte cell culture/insect cell) and shrimp model systems. Biochemical and molecular biology techniques will be used throughout the project. Candidate will study the antiviral effect of melanin synthesis reaction and the interaction of virus with protein in proPO system.
Eligibility/Specific Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry/ Molecular Biology or related field. Expertise in molecular, cellular and standard immunological techniques and experience in cell culture is highly desirable.
Position 3. A search for bioactive compounds from Actinomycetes
- To isolate the chemical constituents from crude extracts by using chromatographic techniques including column chromatography, HPLC, etc.
- To identify the chemical ingredients by using spectroscopic techniques including NMR, MS, IR, UV, etc.
- To evaluate biological activity of isolated compounds
Eligibility/Specific Qualifications:Candidates must have skill in various separation techniques of isolation of bioactive compounds, such as HPLC, column chromatography etc. Also, the candidates should have knowledge and skill in the art of structural elucidation of chemical structures by using spectroscopy techniques such as NMR, MS etc.
Position 4. Validation of malarial drug targets using a riboswitch conditional genetic attenuation system
Job description: The project will be based on a systematic “reverse genetics” screen for new antimalarial drug targets. A riboswitch genetic tool, currently under development, will be employed for this process. From an initial Bioinformatics survey, candidate genes will be selected for riboswitch targeting. For each gene candidate, specific targeting sequences must be cloned and placed into a riboswitch plasmid vector. The targeting constructs are introduced into malaria parasites by electroporation and transgenic parasites with the riboswitch integrated at the target gene selected. Transgenic parasites will be analysed for loss of function phenotype using different techniques: e.g., microscopy, transcriptomics (DNA microarray) and proteomics.
Eligibility/Specific Qualifications:(1) Basic knowledge in subjects of Malaria parasites and Molecular biology with Medical background (2) Be able to work inside the biosafety laboratory level 2 and level 3 (3) Cell Biology is desirable.
Position 5. Functional characterization of fatty acid elongase involved in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis in Oomycetes
- Cloning and characterization of the elongase gene of Pythium spp.
- Study of substrate specificity and preference of the elongase enzyme by heterologous expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Eligibility/Specific Qualifications:Candidates must have skill in Molecular biology, gene manipulation in yeast, and fatty acid and lipid analysis.
Position 6. Identification of novel drug resistance genes in malaria parasites
Job description: The candidate will join the current research team to identify novel drug resistance gene in malaria parasites. The activities include testing of parasites, monitoring of its antimalarial resistance in vitro, generation of the parasite’s gene library, transfection of Plasmodium parasites, selection of drug resistance parasites and identification of drug resistance genes.
Eligibility/Specific Qualifications:Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Molecular biology, Genetics, Cell biology or related fields. Previous experience working in parasitology, especially malaria, is a plus, but not a must.
