The Asian Regional Workshop on Sustainable Food Production, Biotechnology, and Biosafety was held on 10-11 January 2012 at the Rama Gardens Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. The Workshop brought together experts and national authorities from Asian countries to discuss the topics and agendas which will be addressed at the upcoming global events such as Rio+20, CPB, CBD and CSD-20. The Workshop also analyzed how these global events are interrelated and outcomes of these events can be implemented at the national level.
Notable experts speaking at the Workshop included Dr. Julian Adams (University of Michigan); Dr. Paul Teng (National Institute of Education, Singapore), Dr. Piet Van der Meer (Public Research and Regulation Initiative), Dr. Dominic Muyldermans (CropLife International), Dr. Kazuo Watanabe (University of Tsukuba), Dr. Jose Falck Zepeda (International Food Policy Research Institute(IFPRI)/Program for Biosafety Systems), and Dr. Vilasini Pillai (Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation, Malaysia). Over 50 participants, mostly officials and scientists involved in biosafety policy and regulations, from 15 different countries took part in the event.
The workshop was co-organized by the Public Research and Regulation Initiative (PRRI), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)/Program for Biosafety Systems and the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech (ISAAA). BIOTEC, along with Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and the Biotechnology Alliance Association of Thailand, served as the local host.
