On 17 January 2013, Mr. Woravat Auapinyakul, Minister of Thailand’s Science and Technology and Dato Haji Je Abdullah Bin Manawi, Agriculture Minister of the Malaysian Kelantan State visited BIOTEC. Dr. Thaweesak Koanantakool, President of NSTDA and Dr. Kanyawim Kirtikara, BIOTEC Executive Director were on hand to welcome the Ministers.
Lab tours and exhibition were organized which include the introduction on Thailand diversity of microorganism and BIOTEC research program to study the conservation and sustainable utilization of these assets. Commercial products from BIOTEC R&D were on display, such as NPV (a biocontrol agent for pests) and animal feed enzymes. The tour of Genomic Research Laboratory provided an insight into the use of genome technology as a foundation for crop improvement in Thailand’s breeding program of rice, rubber tree and oil palm. Monoclonal Antibody Production Laboratory presented research in diagnostic development for detection of plant and foodborne pathogens. A demonstration on the use of immunochromatographic strip test for the detection of bacterial fruit blotch disease in cucurbit plants was given to the Ministers.
