BIOTEC researchers were honored with the NRCT Awards presented by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).
Prof. Timothy W. Flegel, Expert at Center of Excellence for Shrimp Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (Centex Shrimp), a joint lab between BIOTEC and Mahidol University, was named the 2013 NRCT Outstanding Researcher in the field of agricultural science and biology. Prof. Flegel is recognized for his research on shrimp humoral and cellular defense mechanisms and development of DNA probes for detection of shrimp pathogens as well as the use of DNA probes to study pathogen cycles.
In addition, 2013 NRCT Excellent Research Award in the field of agricultural science and biology went to Dr. Piti Amparyup, BIOTEC researcher from Center of Excellence for Molecular Biology and Genomics of Shrimp, a joint lab between BIOTEC and Chulalongkorn University, for his work on “Molecular mechanism of prophenoloxidase system-mediated melanization and its significant role in shrimp immune responses against major pathogens”. The research study will lead to a prevention and control of infectious diseases and development of disease resistance in shrimp. The research study will lead to prevention and control of infectious diseases and development of disease resistance shrimp for aquaculture industry.
The work on DNA sensor for diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis also won 2013 NRCT Outstanding Research Award in the field of medical science. The project was spearheaded by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kosum Chansiri from Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Srinakharinwirot University with Ms. Wansika Kiatpathomchai and Mr. Narong Arunrut, from Centex Shrimp, as co-researchers.
