On 2 October 2015, the opening ceremony of 2015 Human Resource Development Program in Biotechnology for ASEAN member countries was organized at BIOTEC, Thailand Science Park to welcome 12 young researchers from ASEAN member countries. In addition to welcome remark delivered by Dr. Nitsara Karoonuthaisiri, Director of Biosensing Technology Research Unit, each ASEAN researcher introduced his/her research, workplace and home country to the audience.
The 12 recipients to the HRD Program in Biotechnology come from Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. They will stay for 3-6 months in BIOTEC laboratories to work on research projects. Research topics offered this year include metagenomic, aquatic molecular genetics and biotechnology, validation of drug targets for instance.
It was envisioned that by 2020, ASEAN will be technology competitive, competent in strategic and enabling technologies, with an adequate pool of technologically qualified and trained manpower, and strong networks of scientific and technological institution and centers of excellence. ASEAN member countries have to move up the technology ladder and focus on enhancing their capability for technological innovation in many areas, especially in biotechnology. Thus, this Human Resource Development Program is one of BIOTEC's contributions to the ASEAN vision 2020 and builds up scientific capacity and technology competitiveness for ASEAN.
