Two major research strategies in the laboratory include (1) Research on defense mechanism of shrimp respond to infection and their application. Two lethal shrimp pathogens; White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) and Yellow Head Virus (YHV) are in focus. Two models have been established to serve the strategies; persistent infection and intracellular infectious mechanisms of shrimp viruses. Another research strategy (2) is Research on shrimp pathogen discovery and characterization. The new emerging or recurrent shrimp pathogens will be characterized if it is the causative of a disease outbreak by using integrated platforms such as biochemical tests, microbiology techniques, molecular biology, metagenomics and transcriptomics. Bioinformatic tools and technology will also use to support the discovery of pathogen and characterization. This will help the development of shrimp aquaculture in sustainable direction.
