The Bioassay laboratory provides various kinds of screening services to evaluate the biological activities of crude or purified natural products, natural product derivatives and synthetic compounds.  The tests can be done at a single or multiple concentrations for the analysis of effective concentration values, e.g. IC50 and MIC.   Available services are as follows.

1. Cytotoxicity tests against mammalian cell lines (การทดสอบความเป็นพิษต่อเซลล์สัตว์เลี้ยงลูกด้วยนม)
These assays investigate the ability of compounds to inhibit cell growth.  Assays based on colorimetric (MTT) or fluorometric (resazurin microplate assay) detection of viable cells, or measurement of green fluorescent protein (GFP) expressing cell mass, depending on cell types.

Available cell lines include:

  • KB (human oral cavity carcinoma)
  • MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma)
  • NCI-H187 (human small cell lung, carcinoma)
  • HepG2 (human hepatocarcinoma)
  • Caco-2 (human colon adenocarcinoma)
  • B16-F10 (mouse melanoma)
  • HEp-2 (human larynx epithelial)
  • Vero (African green monkey kidney)
  • L929 (mouse subcutaneous connective tissue)
  • 3T3 (mouse embryonic fibroblast)
  • IEC6 (rat small intestine epithelial)
  • BHK21 (baby hamster kidney fibroblast)
  • Human dermal skin fibroblast

 2. Cytotoxicity tests against insect cell lines (การทดสอบความเป็นพิษต่อเซลล์แมลง)
These in vitro assays examine the ability of compounds to inhibit growth in two insect cell lines: Sf9 (Spodopthera frugiperda, pupa ovarian tissue) and C6/36 (Aedes albopictus, mosquito larvae).  The assays are based on colorimetric MTT method.

3. Anti-human and animal infectious pathogens (การทดสอบฤทธิ์ยับยั้งเชื้อก่อโรคในคน)
The susceptibility of pathogens to compound can be investigated by observing its growth inhibitory effects.  The assays provided include anti-malarial parasite (Plasmodium falciparum), anti-TB (Mycobacterium tuberculosis), anti-herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1), anti-Candida albicans and anti-Bacillus cereus. Furthermore, the new assay against animal pathogen--anti- avian influenza virus assay can be determined the ability of compounds to inhibit the activity of Neuraminidase (NA) from H5N1 strain.

4. Anti-plant disease pathogens (การทดสอบฤทธิ์ยับยั้งเชื้อก่อโรคในพืช)
These assays investigate the ability of compounds to inhibit fungal spore development based on staining of spore germ-links with a fluorescent dye, carboxy fluorescein diacetate (CFDA).  The assays provided are anti-rice blast disease pathogen (Magnaportha grisea) and anti-dirty panicle disease pathogen (Curvularia lunata).

5. Mycoplasma testing of cultured cells (การตรวจสอบการปนเปื้อนเชื้อไมโคพลาสมาในน้ำเลี้ยงเซลล์)
The assay tests for the presence of mycoplasma in cell cultures using MycoProbe Mycoplasma Detection kit (R&D systems), which requires a 1.5-ml sample of culture medium from cells grown without antibiotics for at least two weeks
