On 15 May 2008, the Governing Board of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) has approved the appointment of Dr. Kanyawim Kirtikara as BIOTEC Executive Director.
Kanyawim joined BIOTEC in 1998 as a researcher in bioassay laboratory. She rose to become Director of BIOTEC Central Research Unit in 2005 and Deputy Director of BIOTEC in charge of capacity building in late 2007.
Kanyawim completed her Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Connecticut in the United States. Following the completion of her Ph.D., she began a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Rutgers University in the Department of Plant Sciences and obtained a second postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Medicine, University of Tennessee focusing on complex regulations of genes involved in prostaglandin synthesis. She joined BIOTEC upon returning from the US in 1998. Despite her administrative responsibility, Kanyawim continues to be engaged in research, focusing on prostaglandin biosynthesis in both mammalian and invertebrate models, and to publish both research and reviews papers. She is also actively involved in research investigating natural products from microorganisms found in Thailand. Kanyawim is presently a member and part of the secretariat team of The Thai Academy of Science and Technology (TAST).
Kanyawim succeeded Prof. Morakot Tanticharoen, whose 8-year leadership has brought in tremendous growth and international recognition to the Center. Prof. Morakot Tanticharoen will remain serving BIOTEC in various technical committees.
