BIOTEC in collaboration with Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA), CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development), and the French Embassy held a training workshop on “Chemical Contaminants in Food” on 27 – 31 October 2008 at BIOTEC, Thailand Science Park. The aim of the workshop was to reinforce and increase factual knowledge concerning chemical contamination in food for regional countries. Twenty participants from Lao PDR, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand participating in this workshop were fully supported by TICA and the French Embassy.
The workshop was designed as both lecture and laboratory type sessions focusing on various aspects of food safety and regulations. The course covered the basic principle of chemical contaminants in food and the up-to-date information about EU regulations by specialists from different regulatory agencies and companies such as the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards (ACFS), CIRAD and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA Thailand). In addition to lecture, participants were also given opportunity to conduct lab practice on the “Analytical Methods and Technologies for Extraction and Detection of Pesticides and Antibiotics in Foods” as well as observe the demonstration of a biosensor and a nanotechnology based diagnostic kits.
This is the 3rd collaborative workshop organized by BIOTEC, TICA and French Embassy. Workshops on “Food Traceability and Food Safety” and “Food Safety, Traceability and Risk Assessment" was held in 2006 and 2007, respectively. This activity is in line with BIOTEC’s long-term commitment to serve as a Regional R&D and Training Hub for ASEAN in biotechnology and life sciences.
