Visit of research scientists from Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ISSCAS)

On 20 – 25 February 2011, BIOTEC hosted a visit of research scientists from Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ISSCAS), China. The initiative for cooperation and this visiting arose from the meeting of executives and researchers from Thailand and ISSCAS in May 2010 under Sino-Thai Scientific and Technical Cooperation with the realization of the importance and urgency of contamination problem.

As part of the visit, BIOTEC and ISSCAS co-organized a Training Workshop on Soil and Tissue Analysis for Heavy Metal on 21-22 February at BIOTEC, Thailand Science Park. The Workshop provided a good opportunity for lecturers, researchers and students to present and discuss latest techniques for soil and tissue testing for heavy metals and exchanged experience in both China and Thailand in the field of soil standard making, monitoring of bioremediation process, regional soil pollution survey and etc. The workshop drew about 30 attendees from the universities and government sector.

On 25 February, a roundtable discussion was held to explore and discuss the scope and challenges of possible research collaboration on phyto-bioremediation technologies for heavy metal. The meeting brought together representatives of Chulalongkorn University, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi and BIOTEC/NSTDA. The mutual research interests included phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated in agricultural soil focusing on cadmium remediation in paddy rice field, risk assessment and risk based soil standards, management of acid mine drainage in mining area, bioremediation of organic pollutants: mechanisms and application and R&D of innovative physiochemical remediation technologies.

Apart from the workshop and the meeting, ISSCAS researchers also visited Environmental Research Institute and National Center of Excellence for Environmental and Hazardous Waste Management, Chulalongkorn University.
