BIOTEC organizes Preservation and Management of Microbial Resources Workshop

The training-workshop on Long-Term Preservation and Management of Microbial Resources with Agricultural Importance, held from 23-27 May 2011 at Thailand Science Park, was organized by BIOTEC in cooperation with Asian Consortium for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Microbial Resources (ACM); Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA); Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB); National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH), the Philippines; NITE Biological Resource Center (NBRC), Japan; and World Data Centre for Microorganisms (WDCM), China. The training aims to increase the capabilities of participants in the proper handling, longterm preservation and quality control of microorganisms to maintain high quality inoculants which will help ensure their effectiveness in the field, including enhancing the awareness and appreciation on the benefits of high quality microbe-based fertilizers and bio-control products.

Lectures and lab practice were delivered by experts from China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Thailand. Course content covers topics in the area of preservation and management of microbial resources such as ISO principles and OECD guidelines for culture collections; information management and database design; legal management of microbial resources; classification and taxonomy of filamentous fungi; preservation and taxonomy of algae; classification of bacteria and modern techniques for yeast taxonomy. Moreover, participants also learned different techniques and approaches through hands-on sessions such as DNA sequence data processing and interpretation; demonstration and practice on liquid drying and cryo-preservation techniques as well as information management.

In all, nearly 70 participants made up of researchers, lecturers and Ph.D. students from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand attended the Workshop.
