On 15 June 2015, BIOTEC/NSTDA and Thermo Fisher Scientific Private Limited entered into an agreement to establish metabolomic and dereplication strategies for natural product research to identify bioactive natural products against fungal pathogens in Thailand. Representing BIOTEC and Thermo Fisher Scientific were Dr. Kanyawim Kirtikara, BIOTEC Executive Director, and Mr. Pang Sze Hann, Vice President and General Manager, Southeast Asia & Taiwan, Thermo Fisher Scientific Private Limited.
Under the collaboration, BIOTEC and Thermo Fisher Scientific will employ a wide range of analytical tools including state-of-the-art high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) systems to identify bioactive metabolites derived from microbes. The goals are to expedite the process of novel metabolite discovery, and to identify bioactive compounds against fungal pathogens that damage economically important crops in Thailand. The bioactive compound to be discovered in this project could potentially replace chemical fungicides usage in agriculture. This will not only result in environmentally friendly agricultural products, but also improvement of the product quality and safety for consumers.
