The Marine Biotechnology Laboratory was established in 1987 as a cooperative research laboratory between BIOTEC and Chulalongkorn University. The Laboratory aims to conduct research to develop useful technologies for sustainable aquaculture industry.

Research Scope

  • Aquaculture research for improving fish and shellfish broodstock performance and for sustainable utilization of aquatic plants.
  • Development of probiotics for improving growth and immune responses of shrimp and fish.
  • Aquaculture nutrition for economically cultured marine species, such as Penaeus monodon, Macrobrachium rosenbergi and Lates calcalifer
  • Aquatic environmental biotechnology applied to closed re-circulating aquaculture systems and the development of biomarkers for water pollution.
  • Marine biology and the cultivation of potential natural producers of bioactive compounds.

Highlights

  • Aqua RASD technology, a closed re-circulating aquaculture system integrated with hybrid nitrification biofilter tanks for ammonia removal and patented Tubular Denitrification Reactor (TDNR) for nitrate removal.
  • Continuous microalgal culture system for continuous production ofvarious species of microalgae such as Chaetoceros, Thalassiosira, Chlorella and Spirulina.
  • Studies on the genetic diversity of various marine species in Thailand.
  • Molecular genetic markers of economically important marine species in Thailand.
  • Phytoplankton and zooplankton production systems suitable for commercialization.
  • Shrimp feed formulation to promote ovarian and sperm development.
  • Major Equipment and Facilities
  • Molecular biology laboratory
  • Applied microbiology laboratory
  • Water quality analysis laboratory
  • Microalgae culture laboratory with photobioreactors
  • Analytical chemistry equipment: US-Vis spectrophotometer, HPLC
  • Food analysis laboratory for the proximate analysis of feed
  • Indoor experimental tanks and  indoor and outdoor wet laboratory areas
  • Aquaculture feed pellet mills
