ความเป็นมา

สมาคมเทคโนโลยีชีวภาพแห่งประเทศไทย พัฒนามาจากชมรมเทคโนโลยี ชีวภาพ ซึ่งเป็นการรวมกลุ่มกันของผู้ที่สนใจวิชาการทางด้านเทคโนโลยีชีวภาพ โดยเริ่มต้นอย่างจริงจังครั้งแรกเมื่อปลายปี 2531 ในการประชุมวิชาการของโครงการวิจัยแลกเปลี่ยนระหว่างประเทศไทยกับประเทศญี่ปุ่น ซึ่งมหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ เป็นเจ้าภาพจัดการประชุม จากการประชุมครั้งนั้น ทำให้เกิดแนวความคิดที่จะจัดการประชุมร่วมกันระหว่างกลุ่มผู้สนใจวิชาการทางด้านเทคโนโลยีชีวภาพขึ้น ทั้งที่ เป็นอาจารย์ นักวิจัย นักวิชาการ และบุคคลในหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ของภาครัฐ รัฐวิสาหกิจหรือบุคคลจากบริษัทเอกชน เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้มีการพบปะแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ ความคิดเห็น และประสบการณ์ เพื่อรับทราบความก้าวหน้าในงานวิจัยและการนำเทคโนโลยีที่เกี่ยวข้องไปประยุกต์ใช้
จากแนวความคิดดังกล่าว ได้ส่งผลให้มีการจัดการประชุมวิชาการประจำปีอย่างต่อเนื่องทุก ๆ ปี นับตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2532 ซึ่งมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์เป็นเจ้าภาพจัดการประชุม ผลการประชุมทำให้ทราบว่าแนวความคิดร่วมกันในการก่อตั้งสมาคมฯ ได้รับการตอบสนองด้วยดี จึงได้ทำการจัดตั้งเป็นสมาคมเทคโนโลยีชีวภาพแห่งประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2534

เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2542 จดทะเบียนต่อนายทะเบียนสมาคมประจำกรุงเทพมหานคร กองสันติบาล สำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติ มีตราสัญลักษณ์ประจำสมาคมเป็นรูป เส้นสายของ DNA ซึ่งเป็นต้นกำเนิดของชีวิต การคลายตัวของเส้นสาย DNA คือ วัตถุประสงค์ของสมาคมฯ ในการสนับสนุนการค้นคว้า วิจัย เพื่อเปิดเผยความเร้นลับแห่งเทคโนโลยีชีวภาพออกสู่โลกภายนอก อันจะเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการพัฒนาประเทศ ส่วนสีที่ใช้ คือ สีขาว สีน้ำเงิน และสีแดง ซึ่งเป็นสีประจำชาติ นอกจากนี้ สีแดงเป็นสีแห่งชีวิต

การบริหารสมาคมฯ ดำเนินการโดยคณะกรรมการบริหารสมาคมฯ โดยส่วนใหญ่มาจากการเลือกตั้งของสมาชิกสมาคมฯ มีวาระคราวละ 3 ปี

Establishment

The Thai Society for Biotechnology, formerly known as Biotechnology Club formed in 1988, was established by a group of people who had interest in biotechnology. At first, it was inspired by the members of the club attending the academic conference on the exchange of research projects between Japan and Thailand, held in 1990 by Chiang Mai University. The idea generated at that moment was that there should have been a meeting specific on biotechnology for professors, researchers, personnel from both government and private sectors and others who had interest in this area. A meeting would be valuable sources of information: exchanging knowledge in ideas and experiences of each other, realizing the progress of biotechnological researches and applications.

Accordingly, the annual meetings on biotechnology have been first organized by Kasetsart University and by other hosts every consecutive year since 1989. The results of each conference confirmed that the idea of forming the Thai Society for Biotechnology needed to be taken seriously. Therefore, the Thai Society for Biotechnology was established since then, in 1991.

In 1999, the Thai Society for Biotechnology was registered with the Bangkok Association Registrar at the Special Branch Bureau, the Royal Thai Police Headquaters. The emblem consists of the DNA strands, which is the origin of life. The unfold of the DNA strands refers to the objectives of the TSB that provide support for research studies to reveal the mysteries of biotechnology to the outside world which will be beneficial to national development. The white, blue and red colors are the national colors. The red color also refers to the color of life.

The Thai Society for Biotechnology was administrated by the executive board which was a 3-years term and selected by the members of the society.
