Dr. Theerayut Toojinda named “2020 NRCT Senior Research Scholar”

Dr. Theerayut Toojinda, BIOTEC’s Deputy Executive Director, and a team of researchers from BIOTEC and Kasetsart University, is awarded the 2020 NRCT Senior Research Grant for a project titled “Investigating the Potential Adaptive Responses of the Thai Rice Resource to Biotic and Abiotic Stresses Under Future Climate Change Conditions”. The 3-year-project was funded by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) for THB 7,500,000.

The project focuses on the use of 270 Thai rice cultivars for the study of adaptive mechanisms of rice to environmental conditions. The results of this study will shed the light on genetic improvement of rice for biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. With the help of advanced genomics and bioinformatics, the study of function and interaction of genes for rice blast and bacterial blight resistance to Magnaporthe oryzae and Xanthomonas oryzae pv.oryzae in local and improved varieties will be looked at. The project also examines the interaction of Metarhizium and brown planthopper which serves as a guideline for the selection of strain with potential as biological control agents of the brown planthopper.
