Biosensing Technology Research Unit integrates emerging technology platforms to develop novel biodiagnostics for the needs of Thailand. The technology platforms that have been established include recombinant protein technology, transcriptomics, phage-based binders, microarray, bead array, LAMP-based sensors and metabolomics.

Research Scope

  • Biodiagnostics for agricultural and food applications aims to develop multiplex detection method for foodborne pathogens and plant pathogens by applying microarray technology in combination with target-specific antibodies. In addition, to answer the actual need of aquatic animal farming, various LAMP-based sensors are developed to provide a rapid, accurate and inexpensive test for diseases of several economically important aquatic animals such as shrimp and fish. Moreover, DNA microarray is employed for gene expression analysis of an organism using the black tiger shrimp as a model. Metabolomic technology is utilized to investigate potential metabolite markers for important traits in agricultural produces and food products.
  • Biodiagnostics for healthcare and medicine employs transcriptomics and metabolomics to identify biomarkers associated with infectious diseases and aging-population diseases for diagnostic and drug development.
  • Biodiagnostics for environment aims to develop analytical method to measure the activity of methanogens for biogas production in the wastewater treatment system.

  • Development of DNA diagnostic techniques using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) to detect pathogens of aquatic animals and humans.
  • Development of LAMP-based biosensors such as disposable electrochemical biosensor fabricated by hybrid printing technology, a portable mini-potentiostat, and an inexpensive, real-time LAMP turbidimeter for the detection of human pathogens, human diseases, shrimp viruses, and foodborne pathogens.
  • Hybridoma technology for the generation of monoclonal antibodies and immunoassay technique development for diagnostic purposes.
  • Detection of fish and shrimp pathogens using a simple colorimetric observation.
  • Antibody array system for simultaneous multiple detections of foodborne or plant pathogens.
  • DNA microarray for various applications including lactic acid bacteria identification and shrimp reproduction maturation study.
  • Identification of intestinal bacteria in shrimp using pyrosequencing technology.
  • Molecular study of reproductive maturation in the black tiger shrimp using different feeds to induce maturation.
  • Structure-function relationship of biomolecular target for drug development and protein engineering applications.
  • Molecular interaction for macromolecule and ligand by crystal structure analysis and computational approach.
  • Application of MS-based technology for biomolecular analysis and detection.

  • Microarray technology facilities: microarray printer, bead array reader, chemiluminescent signal detector and fluorescent scanner.
  • Protein structure-function study facilities: chromatographic system for protein preparation and purification, UV-visible spectrophotometer.
