{"id":10856,"date":"2016-07-19T16:51:05","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T09:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biotec.or.th\/home\/?p=10856"},"modified":"2020-10-07T22:40:56","modified_gmt":"2020-10-07T15:40:56","slug":"new-cordyceps-species-discovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biotec.or.th\/home\/en\/new-cordyceps-species-discovered\/","title":{"rendered":"New Cordyceps species discovered"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Surveys of invertebrate-pathogenic fungi in community forests in Thailand revealed two new interesting&nbsp;<em>Cordyceps<\/em>. &nbsp;They are&nbsp;<em>Cordyceps chiangdaoensi<\/em>s and&nbsp;<em>Cordyceps morakotii<\/em>, pathogenic to Coleoptera larvae and&nbsp;<em>Odontomachus<\/em>&nbsp;ant pupae, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses strongly support these two fungi as two distinct new&nbsp;<em>Cordyceps<\/em>&nbsp;species. These two new species were described in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11557-016-1170-3\/fulltext.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this publication<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The genus&nbsp;<em>Cordyceps<\/em>&nbsp;comprises approximately 50 species of fungi that mainly parasitize insects. &nbsp;They infect a plethora of invertebrates, such as insects, spiders, and nematodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BIOTEC has been engaging in the biodiversity study of invertebrate pathogenic fungi since 1993. &nbsp;The study further expanded to a more integrated approach for understanding fungal biology by putting fungi into their natural context, i.e. in interaction with other biotic and abiotic environments, including their host insects in the case of insect pathogenic fungi. &nbsp;The study has also been broadened to other groups of fungi in such as alkaline tolerant fungi, dung fungi, freshwater fungi, lichen fungi, litter Basidiomycetes, marine fungi, palm fungi and seed fungi. &nbsp;To learn more about our research in this field, please visit the website of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biotec.or.th\/bfbd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fungal Biodiversity Laboratory<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biotec.or.th\/bmit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microbe Interaction Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ref:<\/strong>&nbsp;Tasanathai, K., Thanakitpipattana, D., Noisripoom, W., Khonsanit, A., Kumsao,J. and Luangsa-ard, J.J.
