BIOTEC-NSTDA, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and Guangxi University drive forward Synthetic Biology toward global research collaboration

13 August 2025 – The National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), NSTDA, led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Chaowaree Adthalungrong, BIOTEC Executive Director, Dr. Kobkul Laoteng, Deputy Executive Director for Biotechnology Research and Development for Industry, and Dr. Warinthorn Songkasiri, Deputy Executive Director for Research Support, together with a research team led by Dr. Verawat Champreda, welcomed Prof. Zhao Xinqing from the School of Life Science and Biotechnology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and Prof. Jiaxun Feng, Vice President of Guangxi University, to discuss further collaboration in:

  • Synthetic Biology
  • AI-guided enzyme design
  • Microbial Cell Factory

The BIOTEC–SJTU partnership, established in 2018, has achieved:

  • 5 joint research projects supported by the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, and Program Management Unit for Human Resources & Institutional Development, Research and Innovation (PMU-B), among others.
  • Published over 11 articles in international Q1 journals
  • Patents on novel microbial strains
  • Exchange and development of Thai researchers

This collaboration strengthens Thailand’s synthetic biology research network internationally, connecting BIOTEC’s research capacity and infrastructure with leading Chinese universities, including SJTU and Guangxi University, to jointly develop advanced biotechnology innovations, drive the Bioeconomy, and address global challenges.
