Dr.  Wirulda Pootakham graduated from Cornell University, USA, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Molecular Biology, earning the highest academic distinction of Summa Cum Laude with Distinction in Research. She subsequently obtained her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from Stanford University, USA.

Following the completion of her doctoral studies, Dr. Pootakham joined the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) as a researcher in 2010. In 2016, she was appointed Head of the Genomics Research Team. In 2024, she assumed the position of Director of the National Omics Center (NOC). She currently serves as Deputy Executive Director for Research Support at the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), NSTDA.

Dr. Pootakham has extensive research experience and expertise in genomic technologies, particularly in the development and application of molecular markers for genetic improvement and breeding programs involving economically important crops and aquatic species, including oil palm, cassava, rubber, durian, and black tiger shrimp.

Among her notable research achievements is the development of HybridSure, an innovative DNA-based testing technology designed for highly accurate hybrid seed purity testing and plant variety identification. This technology has played a significant role in enhancing seed production efficiency, strengthening quality assurance, and supporting the competitiveness and export potential of Thailand’s hybrid seed industry.

In recognition of her outstanding scientific contributions and technological innovations, Dr. Pootakham has received numerous prestigious national and international awards. These include the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) Research Awards in Agriculture and Biology (2017, 2019, 2023, and 2024), the Young Technologist Award (2017), the UNESCO–L’Oréal For Women in Science Research Fellowship (2018), and the Taguchi Award for Outstanding Researcher (2022).

Dr. Pootakham is recognized as one of Thailand’s leading researchers in genomics and biotechnology. Through her scientific leadership, research excellence, and expertise in molecular marker technologies, she continues to play a pivotal role in advancing Thailand’s biotechnology capabilities. She also serves as an expert advisor on the application of molecular markers in crop and aquaculture breeding programs, contributing to the development of innovative technologies that strengthen the country’s agricultural productivity, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability.
